Chapter 17
Statistically Speaking
I placed my hand on Paulina’s shoulder. “It’s okay now. Everything’s all right.”
With eyes the size of saucers, she gripped my shirt in two white-knuckle fists. “What is going on? You’ve got to tell me the truth.” Her trembling voice cracked on every other word, and veins visible beneath the skin of her neck throbbed with every beat of her pounding heart.
I took her hands in mine, primarily to keep her from ripping my shirt from my chest. “There are some people who aren’t particularly happy with your father at the moment. It’s going to be up to him to tell you the details when he feels the time is right, but for now, I’m going to keep you and your family safe.”
“People? What people? What do they want? What do you mean safe? We almost got blown up, and you think you can keep us safe? Who are you anyway?”
I squeezed her hands. “Almost is the keyword. We didn’t get blown up, and we’re still alive. That’s what’s important. My name is Chase, but beyond that, all you need to know about me is that I promise to keep you, your mother and father, and especially Marissa alive and safe.”
I placed her hands on her lap and stood, making my way back toward the cockpit. As I passed Mario’s seat, I bore holes through him with my gaze. “You need to tell your daughter the truth.”
Marissa was kneeling on the sheepskin-covered copilot seat with both hands on the yoke and Clark grinning at her. Her dark, Italian eyes beamed up at me. “Look at me! I’m driving the airplane.”
I couldn’t suppress my grin. “You certainly are, but it’s my turn to drive, so let’s get you back to your mommy.”
She stuck out her bottom lip at a well-practiced attempt at pouting, but she couldn’t suppress her giggle. “Okay, if you say so. But it’s my turn next.” She squirmed out of her seatbelt without unbuckling it and reached up for me. I hefted her from the seat and tried to set her down so she could walk to the back of the plane, but she clung to me like a baby chimpanzee. The Caravan wasn’t tall enough for me to stand up, but I did my best to waddle back to Paulina’s seat with Marissa hanging on for the ride. She finally let go when we made it back to her mother.
“Mommy, I was driving the airplane!” Her excitement was contagious for me, but her mother was still trembling. “Mommy, what’s wrong? Why are you crying?”
Paulina brushed her fingers through Marissa’s dark hair and wiped at her eyes. “It’s okay, baby, I was just scared. Everything is fine now.”
She pulled her daughter onto her lap and hugged the child as if she feared she’d never see her again.
Back in the cockpit, I repositioned my seat and connected my harness.
Clark had that look of mischief twinkling in his eye. “Where’ve you been? You missed all the excitement.”
“Oh, I was getting some fresh air.
